You are infinite, “the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in inapproachable light, whom no eye has seen or can see. To Him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen” (1 Timothy 6:15b-16).
We are finite. Our minds cannot grasp all you are. We rightly see a few glorious aspects of your character and ways but mistakenly think that is all You are, and limit our responses to You based on those few glimpses of You. But You are so much more, and we will spend eternity discovering all the facets of Your being–there is no end to Your glory, goodness, love, might, holiness, faithfulness. . . . Oh, Spirit, illumine our minds with the knowledge of God. Even before we reach heaven open our eyes to see more of who You are. Evoke in us myriads of responses to You in light of who You are.
Help us to learn from each other the good things You have taught others and put them together into a fuller picture of the God we serve. Give us wisdom beyond our finite minds. Open up the whole counsel of Your word to us. Help us to understand the fullness. Cause us to love our true brethren in Christ, who have believed the true gospel. Do not allow us to divide over each of our partial understandings of Your will and character–protect us from this tactic of the enemy who tempts us to take pride in the ways we are right and not see where we are wrong. Unify our hearts in Christ.
Bring us into the fullness of Christ, the fullness of Your word, the fullness of Your Spirit. Open the eyes of our hearts to see the riches of the love of Christ which passes knowledge. Forgive us for quenching the Spirit–help us to understand the full work of the Spirit and seek Him to work mightily in our lives for Your glory. Forgive us, Lord, for magnifying our human reason and desires above Your word. Cause Your word to richly dwell in us as we immerse ourselves in it. Bring us to repentance, Lord, in the areas we are sinning against You. Help us to lay aside the distractions also.
Guide us by Your Spirit. Protect us from deception. Grow our love for You and make us holy as You are holy. Fill our hearts with an overwhelming longing for Your coming. We desire the glorified bodies and minds You have promised us which will allow us to know You in Your fullness.
As we wait, stir our hearts to prayer. Lay Your burdens on our hearts. Make us love what You love and hate what You hate. Pour out Your Spirit on us to strengthen us for prayer–our flesh is weak and we do not know how to pray. Pray in and through us, Holy Spirit.
Fill us with boldness and power by Your Spirit to move on to prayer’s actions: the works You have created for us in Christ for us to walk in. We long for the time with all the earth will yield its increase of souls who will rejoice around Your throne for eternity–men, women and children from every tribe, nation and tongue. Send us out to labor in bringing Your truth and love to them.
We surrender our lives to You, Lord. Wean us from the grip of the pleasures of the world. Cause us to find all our pleasure in You, as we will when we see You face to face.
Make us a peculiar people, salt and light, a people willing to suffer for Your sake. Make us a people who know our God deeply, who are strong and do exploits in Your power and lead many into righteousness. Be glorified in us, Lord Jesus! Come, Lord Jesus, come!
